Nissan Motors uses a simple method for naming their engines series. And KA family engine is the most popular one as part of an engine they were created. There are 3 variant in the Nissan KA engine series, the KA20DE, the KA24E, and the most powerfull one KA24DE.
The KA engines is a series of four-stroke inline-four gasoline piston engines manufactured by Nissan. The engine were offered in 2.0 and 2.4 L. To minimize costs, the engines blocks were made from cast-iron, while the cylinder heads were made of aluminum. Nissan KA engine was commonly used in light trucks and SUVs.

The KA20DE was a DOHC 16-valve engine produced from June 1999 through August 2007. These engine was mainly used in Japanese Domestic Market commercial vehicles.

The KA24E was a SOHC 12-valve engine produced from July 1988 through January 1997. It uses Hitachi sequential electronic fuel injection, and features cast steel connecting rods, a half-counterweighted forged steel crankshaft, and a cast aluminum cylinder head.

The 2.4 L (2,389 cc) KA24DE built in Mexico and used in many Nissan cars and trucks. For those of you that are in the drifting scene, should be familiar these engine. The KA24DE is very similar to the KA24E. As the KA24E is SOHC with three valves per cylinder, the KA24DE is DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder and shim-over-bucket valve actuation.

Is KA24DE an Interference Engine?

The differance between interferance and non interferance engine: on an interferance motor the valve will move down and ocupy the same space that the piston does when it is at top dead center. Of course they don’t hit because the timing set properly and the crank moves the piston out of the way. A non-interferance motor the valves will not hit the piston no matter where you set the cam.

Nissan KA24DE Commons Problems & Regular Maintenance

Nissan KA24DE belongs to the simple, reliable and durable enginesJ from the 90-s era. You need just to serve it regularly and use high quality engine oil. On the front-wheel drive of the car it is enough to press the oil pan a little and the oil pressure may fall. If it has happened, then you need to take off the oil pan and to check the state of oil receiver pick up pipe.

You may easily broke KA24DE engine when you using low-quality engine oil. If your timing chain starts making a noise, it is the sign the engine had a problems.

Valve adjustments should be checked every 1200 miles. Piston and crank are forged, and pretty solid, as such the engine can take quite a bit of punishment. It is thought to be bulletproof, subject to proper servicing and in particular regular oil changes. Replacing the outdated mechanical spark timing with a proper electronically managed solution will make your future tuning mods easier. Pistons are good for power figures around 260hp but going beyond this it makes sense to uprate the pistons, and crankshaft. We’ve heard of some running power figures of 320hp on stock internals as they are so solid, but we would worry about reliability. Fuelling can struggle at higher power figures, as with most tuning projects your choice of injectors and mapping is vital.

One thing you should know is KA24DE engines have high fuel consumption. As for the rest, their engine reliability is on the highest level.

Nissan KA24DE engine tuning Modifications

To gain some power for cheap, you need the most aggressive OEM camshafts. But first of all, repair your engine, it may be old and worn, put your engine in order.

Basic N/A tuning can net you average increases out of your KA24DE / KA24E engine. The KA24 is a larger displacement four-cylinder motor. It was mainly built with low-end torque in mind. It also uses a long piston stroke to achieve its torque. This prevents it from having the high rev limit that is seen with other Nissan four-cylinder motors. With the basic bolt-ons, you can expect to see an additional 30 whp depending on the condition of your engine. Don’t expect any huge horesepower gains from inexpensive NA modifications. While it’s possible to reach 200+ horsepower, it will take superior tuning skills, along with pretty deep pockets. Most of this power is had through ECU tuning and custom parts, including cams, ITB’s, larger valves, port and polish, and upgraded valvetrain. A complete engine overhaul is also recommended if any modifications are to be planned.

KA24DET ( Turbocharged ) – The Ultimate Guide

Turbocharged KA24DE’s, also known as the KA24DET, have been known to handle 10-12PSI without even breaking a sweat on stock bottom ends.

One of the main questions when it comes to carrying out a KA24DET upgrade is, “Why not just swap out for an SR20DE?”
Nissan SR Engine series aren’t exactly the perfect answer either. They too can suffer from reliability issues and not everyone wants to carry out an engine swap when they’ve already got a perfectly good Nissan KA24DE Engine.

This is the most proper way to increase the power of the engine, as stock internals are quite firm and keep the boost easily.
To build KA24DET, you should buy T3/T04E 50 trim 0.63 A/R turbocharger, turbo manifold, downpipe, intercooler, piping kit, Z32 MAF, wideband O2 sensor, wastegate, BOV, Walbro 255 lph fuel pump, fuel injectors 550 cc/min, Clevite main and rod bearings, MLS head gasket, 3” performance exhaust system, JWT ECU.

This will be enough to gain about 350WHP at 16 psi (1.1 bar).

What’s the Difference between KA24E and KA24DE?

KA24E is a single cam motor and KA24DE is a dual overhead cam. The KA24DE has more horsepower and torque. The KA24E has higher compression ratio. The tranmissions and alot of the accessories are the same. On the KA24E engine the power steering pump mounts on the passenger side of the motor and bolts to the head. On the KA24DE the PS pump is on the driver’s side on the block.
